English Football League
The English Football League is one of the oldest professional leagues throughout Europe, with its routes extending as far back as 1888 when it was established. The league itself comprises of some four separate divisions and is contested by teams within England, as well as two professional clubs from Wales with 72 clubs participating over these divisions. Until 1992, the top flight division of the English Football League was division one but due to many clubs wanting to leave for far more lucrative television rights the Premier League was established and has been the English Football League systems top flight ever since. An intricate art of the football league is the system of promotion and relegation it employs, to allow the lower teams of one league to swap with the top teams of another. This system works generally with the bottom three clubs of a higher league going down and three, decided after a third place play off, from a lower league moving to that of a higher one within the English Football League system.
As well as the football league games, there are also a number of cups which take place during the course of a season which give the lower teams of the English Football League the chance to compete on the same stage as their multi-million premier league counterparts for much covered silverware. Corporate sponsorship also plays a big part in English football, with the football league being called the Coca Cola football league, the football league trophy is called the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy as well as the football league cup being known as the Carling Cup.
